Used-Car Financing in the Philippines: Down Payments, Terms, and Questions to Ask
Compare used-car financing by cash out, effective interest rate, total repayment, fees, term, and lender protections.

Compare a used-car loan by the **total amount you will pay**, not only the advertised monthly installment. Ask for the cash out, amount financed, term, payment schedule, effective interest rate, every fee and insurance charge, late-payment consequences, collateral terms, and total repayment in writing before committing.
A listing's monthly estimate is not a loan approval or final lender quotation. Financing depends on the lender's assessment, disclosures, contract, and current policies.
The numbers that belong in every comparison
| Figure | What it tells you | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Cash out | Money required before release, which may include down payment and fees | What exact amount must I pay before I receive the car? |
| Amount financed | Principal covered by the loan | Which charges are included in or added to principal? |
| Term | Number and frequency of payments | Is the term stated in months, and when is the first payment? |
| Effective interest rate | A more useful measure of borrowing cost than a simple add-on rate | What is the disclosed EIR and how was it computed? |
| Total repayment | Sum of scheduled loan payments | What total will I pay if every installment is on time? |
| Fees and insurance | Costs outside or inside the installment | Which are mandatory, refundable, recurring, or financed? |
The BSP loan calculator explains that the effective interest rate reflects the true cost of a loan and helps consumers compare offers and assess paying capacity. It also says the prospective financial institution should provide the actual EIR and disclose fees and charges under applicable rules.
Why the lowest monthly payment may cost more
A longer term can reduce the monthly amount while increasing the number of payments and total financing cost. A low quoted installment can also exclude insurance, processing, documentary, registration, chattel-mortgage, or other charges.
Compare offers using the same vehicle price, down payment, payment frequency, and term. If those inputs differ, label them clearly rather than declaring one offer cheaper.
Questions for the lender or financing provider
- What institution is extending the credit, and is it supervised or registered by the relevant Philippine authority?
- What is the cash price of the vehicle, the down payment, and the amount financed?
- What are the nominal rate and effective interest rate?
- What is the full payment schedule and total repayment?
- Which fees, insurance products, and add-ons are required?
- Is there a balloon payment or residual amount at the end?
- What happens after a late or missed payment?
- Can I pay early, and is there an early-settlement charge or rebate method?
- When and how is the lien or encumbrance released after full payment?
- Where can I complain, request records, or dispute an error?
Do not rely on verbal answers for material terms. Ask for the disclosure statement and contract, read them before signing, and keep a complete copy.
Set a realistic vehicle budget
Loan affordability is larger than the monthly installment. Budget for registration, insurance, fuel, parking, routine service, tires, batteries, unexpected repair, and the cost of time without the vehicle. A used car may need catch-up maintenance soon after purchase.
Stress-test the payment against an income interruption or major repair. If the installment works only when nothing goes wrong, the loan may be too tight.
Protect your account and identity
- Apply through the lender's verified channel, not a link sent by an unknown intermediary.
- Confirm the institution and recipient account independently before paying any processing fee.
- Never disclose an OTP, PIN, password, or full online-banking credential.
- Understand why each identity or income document is needed and how it will be handled.
- Keep official receipts, the disclosure statement, contract, amortization schedule, insurance documents, and communications.
BSP's consumer-protection framework emphasizes disclosure and transparency, fair treatment, protection of client information and assets, and effective recourse for customers of BSP-supervised institutions.
When the quotation is only an estimate
Kardel may display seller-entered financing estimates when a listing accepts bank financing. Treat the figures as a conversation starter. The bank or authorized financing provider—not Kardel and not a listing card—determines eligibility and final terms.
If a seller cannot identify the lender or provide a written quotation, do not send a financing fee. If the financing terms change, compare the full offer again instead of focusing on whether the monthly payment still looks similar.
A simple comparison sheet
Write one row per offer with the lender, cash price, down payment, amount financed, EIR, term, monthly payment, total repayment, fees, insurance, and early-settlement conditions. Mark any unknown figure as unknown. An incomplete low quote is not automatically the best offer.
Browse current cars for sale and confirm whether the specific listing publishes a real cash price or says price on request.
